Gloucester, Virginia Civil War, Andrew Jackson Andrews Autobiography

Civil War Account - Gloucester, Virginia Andrew J Andrews

An autobiography from a Gloucester citizen from the time of the American Civil War.  A first hand account of what the war was like in this area.  A very rare book.  We have had a copy of this for several years but it had a lot of issues and we spent numerous hours trying to clean it all up only to get about three quarters of the way through it.  We found this copy so now we do not have worry about finishing up that last quarter.  Slideshare members can download a free copy of this book any time.  Its a really great read with some very interesting information in it.

Perfect for the Civil War historian and local re enactors and anyone else with an interest in local history.

~ McKesson Medical-Surgical to invest more than $10 million to expand divisional headquarters operation~

RICHMOND - Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that McKesson Medical-Surgical, Inc., an affiliate of McKesson Corporation, a leading healthcare services and information technology company, will invest more than $10 million in capital expense to expand its divisional headquarters operation in Henrico County, creating 225 new jobs. The company will relocate its headquarters facility to 168,500 square feet of the Deep Run III building, which was recently purchased and renovated by Markel|Eagle Partners.

Speaking about the announcement, Governor McAuliffe said, “McKesson Corporation’s expansion is great news for the people of Henrico County and our Commonwealth as a whole as we work to grow and diversify Virginia’s economy. Henrico County has been home to the company’s Medical-Surgical business unit for many years, and McKesson Medical-Surgical is an important employer, paying highly competitive salaries to nearly 600 staff in the region. Virginia’s high quality workforce and world class business environment played a key role in helping McKesson expand, and we are going to continue to leverage those outstanding assets to bring more companies like them here to the Commonwealth.

“The success and growth of Virginia’s existing businesses are key to sustainable economic vitality in the Commonwealth,” said Maurice Jones, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade.“Virginia values its partnership with McKesson Corporation, and McKesson Medical-Surgical has been a significant corporate citizen in Henrico County since 1998. We are proud that the company continues to excel in the marketplace, and celebrate this expansion of its divisional headquarters that brings new jobs and capital investment.”

McKesson Medical-Surgical Inc., headquartered in Henrico County, is an affiliate of the McKesson Corporation. McKesson Corporation, currently ranked 15th on the FORTUNE 500, is a healthcare services and information technology company dedicated to making the business of healthcare run better. McKesson works with payers, hospitals, physicians’ offices, pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies and others across the spectrum of care to build healthier organizations that deliver better care to patients in every setting. “This new, state-of-the-art headquarters will create a collaborative workspace that helps us attract and retain the top talent we need to grow our business and better serve our customers as we work to improve healthcare in the U.S.,” said Stanton McComb, president, McKesson Medical-Surgical. “McKesson Medical-Surgical is proud to be a Top-50 employer in Richmond and I look forward to McKesson’s continued investment in Virginia.”

Since acquiring the property in 2011, Markel|Eagle Partners has completed a multi-million dollar renovation that transformed Deep Run III into one of the premier suburban office buildings in the market.

“McKesson Medical-Surgical’s selection of Deep Run III as the home of their divisional headquarters operation is a great win for all involved,” said J.B. Gurley, a principal with Markel|Eagle. “We have worked very hard to reposition Deep Run III so when we were selected by such a fine company it was a great day for our firm.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the Henrico County Economic Development Authority and the Greater Richmond Partnership to secure the project for Virginia.Governor McAuliffe approved a $500,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Henrico County with the project. Funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

“McKesson’s Medical-Surgical Division has been one of Henrico County’s major employers for as long as I can remember,” said Henrico Board of Supervisors Chairman Patricia S. O’Bannon. “We are pleased with their decision to lease 168,500 square feet of office space in the Deep Run III Building as their new corporate headquarters, and are particularly excited about their plans to add 225 new jobs there over the next few years.” O’Bannon added, “Winning a project of this magnitude takes a team approach, and we appreciate the efforts of the VEDP, the Greater Richmond Partnership, and our local team of the EDA and administration.”

Gloucester, VA Old Page Middle School Site, What Should We Do With It?

There are a lot of questions being asked about what we should do with the old Page Middle School site.  Ideas have ranged from yet another community park to a community recreation center, a place to institute a new multi garage and repair center for the county and school board vehicles to selling the property to a commercial developer.

Here is something to consider, it's got plenty of land and space for building what the county could really use.  A living museum.  Yes, we already have a museum.  A very tiny one.  Not a living one.  The county is always looking for ways to promote tourism and trying to figure out how to get more of the tourist dollars that go to other areas such as Jamestown, Yorktown and of course the big one, Williamsburg.  Those are areas with very rich histories.

Looking at the entire scope of history however, Gloucester ranks right up there with these other locations.  Our history is no less remarkable and we just do not take advantage of it the way we should.  In the past, because of it's location, Gloucester was not a solid contender for being added to the list of joining Jamestown and Yorktown in crafting plans for promoting history and tourism.  Gloucester lacked a solid way to come into the county.  Today that simply isn't the case with a 4 lane bridge connecting us to those major centers.

Gloucester lacks promotions of Pocahontas, Powhatan, Tobacco plantations, indentured servant uprisings, Bacon's rebellion, Battle of the Hook, Rosewell, Walter Reed birthplace and the first shots fired in Virginia during the American Civil War and the list is much larger than this.  Gloucester history is American History and we sit on it doing very little to promote and take advantage of it.

Look across the river and watch as Yorktown continues to grow along with the new major museum being built there.  A well planned living museum could do massive  wonders for this community.  Gloucester does not lack historians with an incredible knowledge of this area's history by any means.  Warren Deal and the entire team that put together the Battle of the Hook event back in October did one of the most spectacular jobs anyone could ever begin to imagine.  The educational value would also be a incredible blessing.  We would happily donate all we could to the concept.  If Gloucester is to grow into the future, our leaders need to start looking at what is needed to make that happen in a well structured way that will benefit the community.  Are we to just sit on our history and let it rot never to take advantage of its opportunities?

If we wait for some company to come in and take advantage of our history, well we have already been doing that and it has gotten us nowhere.  It's time to be proactive.  A new and properly planned living museum could bring in some very much needed tourist dollars and also enhance area education.  It's a win win situation.  In fact, it's Revolutionary.

History has been a big part of this site for some time now.  Especially Virginia history and we continue this tradition by bringing you history in a way that others simply do not.  We do not try to rewrite history.  It's already been written a long time ago by others and so we present older history books that themselves are now a part of history.  The book we are presenting today is a book written over 100 years ago.  Much closer to the time period of the actual event.  This book below was published in 1907.  It has not been subjected to revisionists for changes to make anyone feel good or bad.

We allow free downloads of this book from our Slideshare site.  You will either have to sign in with a Facebook account or LinkedIn account or you can create a free account on Slideshare to get the download.  If you deal with PDF's or create presentations, you will find the service they provide invaluable.  We also use Scribed but prefer Slideshare as our main hosting provider.

Civil War Sites In Gloucester, VA

A question recently asked is are there any Civil War sites in Gloucester, VA. The answer is yes, however, they are not promoted sites and little information is available on them.  Gloucester Point Beach could be said to be one.  The first shots fired in the Civil War in Virginia were right here from Gloucester at or around Gloucester Point beach.

We do have some proof of that as we are presently re working a digital edition of a book written by a local man who fought during the Civil War and later wrote about the action here in Gloucester and around the nation.  The name of the author is Andrew Jackson Andrews and as soon as we are finished withe all the edits we can make, we will be making the book available to everyone for free.

Another site with very poor parking is Tyndal Point Park.  The poor parking can't be helped as there is no place to add parking in the area.  Tyndal Point Park is on the left hand side just as you come off of the Coleman bridge.  After the first shot fired in Virginia of the Civil War, there was a battle in the area of Bethal.  Bethal is in the Ark area of Virginia which you can find on route 17 past the Courthouse area.  Where the battle took place in Ark is not readily disclosed and there are no battlefields in which to visit.

It was not long after the battle of Bethal that Gloucester residents were informed to evacuate as the North took hold of the area until the end of the conflict.  The courthouse area does have a monument to Civil War veterans in the historic Courthouse Circle and you can find some information about the Civil War in Gloucester at the Gloucester Museum that is located right next to the Courthouse Circle.  Other than that, there really isn't much else to see in Gloucester regarding Civil War battles or history.

We will note thought that Gloucester does put on a yearly event commemorating Civil War history and they usually do a great job on this.  You can go to the links bar at the top of this site and visit the Gloucester County events calendar link.
