Gloucester, VA - Free Tools For Local Businesses Number 1

Instead of the Shop Local campaign, as far as Gloucester Main Street businesses are concerned, here is an idea for local businesses to come together on and create.  Everyone is free to copy the example above and expand on it in any way that works for you.

The above here is another example of what can be created through a cooperative.  Numerous restaurants can get together and create a one page promo piece that shows community pride, promotes tourism and promotes each restaurant.  We are starting to work on a number of pieces that you will be able to download and add your own information to it and will create multiple promotions, working as a community information service as well as promoting your own business.  Some will be time sensitive while others will be all year round.  You can use anything you think will work for you.

As these are developed, we will teach you how to use them for maximum advantage and at a very low cost.  Much lower than other forms of advertising.  The pieces will all be designed for anyone to use.  The new tools will be licensed under a creative commons license so that no issues should occur.  How inexpensive will some of these new pieces be?  Whatever your time is worth while others are strictly a printing cost per page.

We kept thinking about how bad we thought the Shop Local campaign was for local merchants and as we cried out about poor leadership under the Shop Local campaign, we saw the need for leadership to happen somewhere.  So we are going to take that position and help you at no cost to you.  You decide if you want to participate.  We also do not care if you are a small business or a big box business.  If you think the tools we give you will help you, then participate.  If not, no hard feelings.

We will be posting the new tools for download on a regular basis, so you will have to keep coming back to see the new offers and decide if you want to use them.  We will try and use the same heading for new tools with updated numbering.  This is number 1.  We will also discuss newspaper ads and show the advantages to cooperatives and how to get into a cooperative possibly for free.

Networked together we can make a serious impact for both local businesses and for the community as a whole.

Gloucester, VA - Readers Continuing Responses On Edge Hill Service Station Slated For Potential Demolition

Readers Respond Again.

"Yes, keep it going. You display your ignorance and wild leaps of "logic" which time will show are at best confused. The station was painted white prior to being sold to the current owner who plans to upgrade the existing building and corner. This reality has nothing to do with a planning document ... say what you will about the planning document's merit ... it is not prescriptive. Not even the long arm of zoning can force a property owner to comply with a planning document. So, like I said, keep up the ignorance and people will gradually see that you have no idea what you are talking about. I particularly like your brazen posting of my previous message and you will probably do the same with this one ... I hope. Ignorance is not bliss. on Gloucester, VA - Readers Respond To Edge Hill Service Station Slated For Possible Demolition"

You claim the reality has nothing to do with a planning document.  The story was about the planning document and what those plans include.  You have not followed this site for any length of time and it shows in your comments.  We have been covering what, in our opinion, are blatant disregards for the laws here in the county.  We have been covering numerous issues for the past year now.

It is our opinion that the county can figure out a way to force the present property owner to comply with plans the county wants to force through based on what we have already seen done throughout the county.  It is through exposure of what the plans are that helps to possibly prevent such actions.  Please read the headlines of that first story again.  Slated for POTENTIAL demolition.

You use an interesting choice of words in your argument.  "Not even the long arm of zoning can force a property owner to comply with a planning document".  Gee, really?  The county can force a property owner into complying with a court order though can't it?  Zoning along with codes and compliance can condemn the structure if the county thinks it's in the best interest can't they?  The county can sure make the life of the present owner miserable if the county so chooses to can't they?

You argue like a lawyer and most people would never catch that little deceptive description so well placed.  Well done.  Let's look at some other facts you missed.  "The building was painted white before being sold to the present owner."  Since then it has undergone exterior structural repairs, painted again to an off white or light tan color, has had numerous murals painted on it's side and other numerous work to create a rather pleasing facade.  Though on the one hand of the term it may not meet certain criteria for period restoration, on another hand, it meets restoration for the overall outer appearance from what it once was not that long ago.

If you want to argue the article for what it is not, go ahead and knock your socks off.

Let's see if we are on the same page here anyway.  We would rather not see the structure demolished.  Reason for exposing plans.  It's not our choice what happens to it though.  It's up to the new owner(s) to do as they see fit with the property.  It's not the place of the county nor the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust to interfere with any property owner anywhere in the county unless the property represents a serious public health issue.  At no time should  county officials or even the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust be involved in creating plans for private property.

Answer that question while on the subject.  Why is the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust even looking at private property and making potential plans for it's use when it does not even have the right to?  Please edumakate this 1st grade graduit since you are so well informed with obviously deep inside knowledge and bursting with such illuminating brilliance so that we no longer linger in ignorance.

In regards to the brazen posting of your comments.  You posted it on this site, not us.  All we do is make it easier for everyone to see and we try to respond to all comments.   We look forward to being illuminated.

Gloucester, VA - Shop Local Included Big Box Franchise Retailers

The recent Shop Local campaign that touted reasons to shop at small local retailers included big box franchise retailers into the mix for shop local.

Businesses like Ace Hardware, a Chevrolet automotive dealership, and Napa Auto Parts to name a few.  Now granted they are local businesses, but then again so is Wal Mart and Rite Aid.

The campaign was not at all a success for all of the local businesses either.  One business we spoke with had zero net results by being a part of the Shop Local campaign and ended up closing the doors a few hours early due to a tremendous lack of business and finding something better to spend time on.

Franchise businesses are about as local as Big Lot's and other major retail chains.  If McDonald's can not be considered a local small business, then how do you include Ace Hardware and the other franchises that were mixed into the campaign?  Shop Gloucester would have been a much better campaign looking at all the facts here.  This destroys the idea that out of every $100.00 spent at a local merchant $45.00 stays in the community as opposed to $13.00 per hundred spent at the big box retailers.  What is the dollar figure for local franchised businesses that were included into the Shop Local campaign?  We have no idea and have not been able to trace where Chesapeake Bank came up with their facts here either.

With more campaigns run as well as this one was, then the below sign is sure to be a vision of the future.

Gloucester, VA - Readers Respond To Edge Hill Service Station Slated For Possible Demolition

From one of our readers.

"Please keep posting stories like this. They prove that you have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about.

The restoration of the station has hardly begun with much work left. Check your facts before you post alarmist articles. I'm guessing you have not spoken with the owners ... they would have told you what is actually going on. "

Now this comment we find rather interesting.  It shows that the reader paid no attention as to where the concept of potential demolition comes from.  It came from the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust's web site.  The information is on a PDF and we have linked that PDF to this site on a previous post.  It is very very slow loading because the PDF is a huge file.  Whoever made the PDF didn't shrink the images on the pages prior to creating the pages.

Look at the previous post.  The top image was shot in 2010 by us.  The second image is from 2012 and is used above.  Now look at the image of the service station that comes from the GMSPT site below.

The picture image from the PDF page that comes from the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust site shows a different look to the present look of the building.  The outside of the building has been restored from it's original condition.  Is it the inside that may not have been restored?  We are not interested in that.  If the building is up for rent, then it's up to the new tenant to put in whatever they want or need for their business.  The outside has been refurbished which is restored.  (Information from the GMSPT suggests the building can be used as a potential cafe, suggesting the building is up for rent).

The demolition information is right in front of everyone.  You are looking at it above.  What exactly is alarmist about it?  What is the reader really trying to convey to us?  Look at 6.1.3 above.  It states remove the existing structure, referring to the Edge Hill Service Station.  This is not our information, it comes from the GMSPT site that anyone can read at any time.

These are part of the sub plans that have already been submitted to the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors and the Board has already passed a 7 to zero vote on accepting.  We have the video showing this as well.  Is the reader nervous about this information being made public?  The local paper sure didn't cover this.  We can post that video at any time as it comes directly from the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors.

It looks like we are making some people rather nervous by exposing what is really going on in the county.  So we are going to continue to expose these bad ideas so everyone knows what is going on.  Like we keep saying, what no one else is willing to cover.

Gloucester, VA - Edge Hill Service Station Slated For Possible Demolition

The top picture is of the Edge Hill gas station that had the call to save it before it's restoration.  The second picture is of the Edge Hill gas station with the restoration complete.  Now it's potentially slated for demolition by the ones who were involved in restoring it?  One plan is to try and make it into a cafe if they can get someone to rent it with such highly limited parking.

Two other options are demolition and replacement with a new office or retail complex, again with no parking and the last option is to turn it into a water fountain.

Why was all the money put into restoring Edge Hill Gas Station only to turn around and now look at tearing it down?  Someone made money on the restoration work.  Someone is going to make money tearing it down and putting up something else.  Do we really need more bad planning?

Free MP3 Download.  Phillipe Stano - Renaissance Child, is the track on offer.  Techno song with good solid upbeat track.  Instrumental.  CC Lic 3.0 attrib.

Gloucester, VA Shop Local Results Predictable - GMSA Thrown Under The Bus?

We are hoping the best for the local businesses participating in the Shop Local campaign.  We see so many problems with the planning and execution of this concept that the results are predictable.  Due to poor communications and a lack of solid leadership for this campaign as well as a bad name, the results will be less than sterling with no long term benefits.  To name one issue we saw, the list of participating stores for each area where these campaigns are being held was not communicated well to the public at all.

The lists should have been updated in the local newspapers in each community starting a month ahead of time and expanding as the list expanded.  This was not done in Gloucester.  We managed to get a list of local participating Gloucester stores at the last minute and have included it with this post.

Second on our list of issues we see.  Most of the store offers are seriously lacking.  Some merchants are only offering a discount if you can show that you shopped other merchants first, making a purchase and then you have to have a minimum purchase with them to get the terrible discount on offer.  Can you say, "We Value Your Business?"  Someone needed to take a leadership role in this area months ago and taught local businesses how to create offers that work.

Sorry, we are not going to give away the information on how to make irresistible offers that work.  That's one everyone that wants to know will have to pay for.  Free advice is only worth what you pay for it when it comes to these types of matters.  The list below looks like it was thrown together at the last minute.  Poor planning and execution.

The expected results for this project are low turnout, low sales and no foreseeable long term gains whatsoever for Gloucester Merchants anyway.  We have not looked at other areas to see if they managed to get any of it right.  Now was the Gloucester Main Street Association thrown under the bus by the local paper, Chamber of Commerce and Chesapeake Bank at the last minute?  The GMSA has been piggybacking this campaign since the beginning and this weeks paper makes no mention of their involvement in the least bit.

Third on our list of issues is that we are only looking at a one day campaign.  It would have worked better shooting for a one week campaign.  And again, better advertising and promotions needed to go into the entire idea.

Overall, it's not the idea that is bad.  The slogan is awful as there is no such thing as being able to shop local anymore in this global world.  We would like to see a better effort and more thought go into a future campaign as well as stronger communications of who, what and where and better reasons as to why.  The Chesapeake Bank's 5 reasons to shop local were a disgrace.

From the Chesapeake Blog.  "Mother Nature will love you

Transportation by sea and by air cause significant damage to our atmosphere according to this infographic from ELocal.com.  Each year, shipments by sea omit one billion metric tons of carbon monoxide and burn off 11 billion gallons of fuel. Also, the United States produces 11.9 million tons of plastic packaging, 90 percent of which ends up in a landfill after just one use."
Shipments by sea omit - take out? - one billion tons of carbon monoxide?  That should be emit and who cares?  Shipments by sea are the most economical form of transportation on the planet.  The United States produces 11.9 million tons of plastic packaging with 90% of which ends up in a landfill after one use.  And Gloucester County gets local people to pick it up off the streets for free, so again, who cares?  Plastic by the way is made from oil.  Our entire economy is built on plastic and other oil derivatives as well as our pharmaceutical drugs.  Everything you can think of depends on oil in one form or another.  I can't think of a better reason to raise prices on everything by claiming it causes so much damage and destruction.  Regulations must be passed to increase the prices even more.  Green people are their own worst enemies and the oil companies really really love them because of it.
Here is the list of participating businesses in the Shop Local campaign.  Gee, the GMSA didn't have an offering of s special discount for potential new member businesses?  Shame on them.

Gloucester, VA - Brett Adkins Takes Win At Virginia Motor Speedway

by Dave Seay
JAMAICA, Va. -- On a beautiful but chilly night Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway hosted the first of 6 “Twins” nights for the 2013 season. The racing in every division was so exciting and intense it produced ten different winners. Picking up wins were Troy Williams of South Mills, VA and Justin Williams of Shipman, VA in Victory Lap Late Models; Junior Carter of Mechanicsville, VA and Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA in Truckin Thunder Sportsman; Mike Reynolds of Clements, MD and Chris Arnold of Chester, VA in Budweiser Modifieds and Brandon Sandridge of Mechanicsville VA and Brian Maxey of King George, VA in Collision One Limited Stock Cars.

Track records were recorded in the Victory Lap Late Models with Justin Williams turning a lap at 18.093 seconds and Chris Arnold breaking his own track record for the second week in a row with a lap of 19.101 seconds.

In the Victory Lap Late Model Twin 20’s the action went three wide right off the drop of the green flag. Troy Williams would grab the top spot with John Staton following in close pursuit. On the next circuit Justin Williams took over the runner-up spot and set out to catch Williams for the lead. J. Williams tried several times to get by T. Williams for the lead but T. Williams had enough to go on to his career first late model win. Rounding out the top 5 were Justin Williams, Billy Tucker wins, John Staton and David Puckett. Richard Harden picked up the Fastrak Pro Late Model win.

The second late model feature started with a huge pile-up in turn 1 that took out several cars. On the restart John Staton pulled away to take the lead over Justin Williams. A caution on lap 7 closed the field on Staton’s bumper. That is all Williams needed. On the drop of the green flag Willimas dove under Staton in turn one to take the lead and once out front set sail leading the remaining laps to pick up his second win of the season. John Saton, Joe Ender, Stephen Childress and Anthony Kincaid rounded out the top five. David Padual picked up the Fastrak Pro Late Model win.

The second late model feature started with a huge pile-up in turn 1 that took out several cars. On the restart John Staton pulled away to take the lead over Justin Williams. In the first Twin 15 for the Trucking Thunder Sportsman Junior Carter used a three wide pass out of turn 2 on lap 2 to take over second. On lap 4 Carter then used an inside move out of turn 4 to take the lead. Carter survived several restarts after cautions and went on to pick up the win. Davey Pullen, Brett Adkins, Hunter Shelton and Carl Vaughan rounded out the top five.

In the final feature for the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Brett Adkins took the lead on the drop of the green flag and dominated the 15 lap affair. Adkins was never challenged and went on to record his second win of the season with Davey Pullen, Hunter Shelton, Tommy Upshaw and Timmy Brinn rounding out the top five. Brinn was the Pitts Lumber rookie of the Race in both twin features.

Gloucester, VA Free County Poster - Leading By Example Breaking County Ordinances

Gloucester, Virginia County Ordinances by Chuck Thompson of TTC Media is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.

http://library.municode.com/HTML/10843/level3/SUHITA_APXBZO_ART6AHICOOVDI.html  This link will take you to Gloucester County Ordinance Section 6 and you will want to view 6A-7 Landscaping.  There you will see what the requirements are for any commercial property along route 17 that must be met in order to be in compliance with this ordinance.

What makes this poster satirical and funny, (based on your sense of humor of course), is that the building in the above picture is a county owned garage along route 17 and does not meet the counties own compliance standards.  That's the county leading by example.  Everyone else has to meet the county code ordinances so why isn't the county setting the example of what they expect everyone else to follow?

You are free to print this poster out, makes all the copies you want, share it with others, sell copies, make T-Shirts from it if you want, use it in print even commercially, no royalties or payments need to be made at any time.  Use it on your own web site.  Have a blast with it.

Download the full size version here pre sized at 17x22.  Smaller prints will work as well.  https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5NJpRCvjyV8V3JzbEFzRFhkYkE/edit?usp=sharing

2 out of at least 6 stores were hit on this sting.  The intent was not to remove spice from the area, nor bath salts, but to remove the synthetic drugs that have the banned substances in them.  The other stores check their stock for proper ingredients.  A strong lesson here for businesses.  None of the other stores that sell this stuff were hit during this sting.  We do not wish them getting hit either.  Again we have to ask, when will real drug busts against real drug dealers happen?  What?  There are no real drugs in Gloucester?

Want a real laugh?  Rite Aid sells a product in their vitamin section that beats drug testing.  It's about $40.00 a bottle.  It's liquid.  You will know it when you see it.  Don't ask the pharmacist or employees about it, they have no clue what the stuff is for or that it's even in the stores.  (One of our staff members used to work for Vitamin World and that was one of their biggest sellers).
