MUSSELS WITH EGG SAUCE - Recipe of the day

A good washing with fresh water is sufficient for mussels that do not have any sand to be cleaned away. Put them on the fire with a sauce of oil, garlic, parsley and a pinch of pepper. Shake them and keep the saucepan covered seeing that they do not absorb all of the sauce. Take them out when they are open and prepare the following sauce: one or more yolks of egg, according to the quantity, lemon juice, one teaspoonful of flour, broth and some of their own juice. Cook this sauce until it becomes a smooth cream and pour it on the mussels when they are served.

Make something extraordinary.

Anti Federalist Papers No 7 - Adoption of the Constitution Will Lead to Civil War

The time in which the constitution or government of a nation undergoes any particular change, is always interesting and critical. Enemies are vigilant, allies are in suspense, friends hesitating between hope and fear; and all men are in eager expectation to see what such a change may produce. But the state of our affairs at present, is of such moment, as even to arouse the dead ...

[A certain defender of the Constitution has stated that objections to it] are more calculated to alarm the fears of the people than to answer any valuable end. Was that the case, as it is not, will any man in his sober senses say, that the least infringement or appearance of infringement on our liberty -- that liberty which has lately cost so much blood and treasure, together with anxious days and sleepless nights-ought not both to rouse our fears and awaken our jealousy? ... The new constitution in its present form is calculated to produce despotism, thraldom and confusion, and if the United States do swallow it, they will find it a bolus, that will create convulsions to their utmost extremities.

Were they mine enemies, the worst imprecation I could devise would be, may they adopt it. For tyranny, where it has been chained (as for a few years past) is always more cursed, and sticks its teeth in deeper than before. Were Col. [George] Mason's objections obviated, the improvement would be very considerable, though even then, not so complete as might be. The Congress's having power without control -- to borrow money on the credit of the United States; their having power to appoint their own salaries, and their being paid out of the treasury of the United States, thereby, in some measure, rendering them independent of the individual states; their being judges of the qualification and election of their own members, by which means they can get men to suit any purpose; together with Col. Mason's wise and judicious objections -- are grievances, the very idea of which is enough to make every honest citizen exclaim in the language of Cato, 0 Liberty, 0 my country!

Our present constitution, with a few additional powers to Congress, seems better calculated to preserve the rights and defend the liberties of our citizens, than the one proposed, without proper amendments. Let us therefore, for once, show our judgment and solidity by continuing it, and prove the opinion to be erroneous, that levity and fickleness are not only the foibles of our tempers, but the reigning principles in these states. There are men amongst us, of such dissatisfied tempers, that place them in Heaven, they would find something to blame; and so restless and self-sufficient, that they must be eternally reforming the state. But the misfortune is, they always leave affairs worse than they find them.

A change of government is at all times dangerous, but at present may be fatal, without the utmost caution, just after emerging out of a tedious and expensive war. Feeble in our nature, and complicated in our form, we are little able to bear the rough Posting of civil dissensions which are likely to ensue. Even now, discontent and opposition distract our councils. Division and despondency affect our people. Is it then a time to alter our government, that government which even now totters on its foundation, and will, without tender care, produce ruin by its fall?

Virginia beats out Tennessee and West Virginia for project

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that W&B Fabricators, Inc., a manufacturer of mining machinery and equipment, will invest $3.1 million to establish an operation in Bland County. Virginia successfully competed against Tennessee and West Virginia for the project, which will create 50 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “With W&B Fabricators’ first Virginia operation, Bland County gains a new employer and 50 valuable jobs for its citizens. Southwest Virginia is a great fit for the company, providing a strong, available workforce, low cost of business and close proximity to an abundant natural resource that will help increase W&B’s customer pool for mining equipment and machinery. We are proud to welcome Virginia’s newest corporate partner and are confident in the company’s future success in the Commonwealth.”

“This project is great news for Bland County and the surrounding region as it recovers from a down economy,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “W&B Fabricators was able to find a locality that fit its needs, as well as an available facility that can be easily modified to allow the company to start production quickly. We thank W&B for investing in Virginia and creating 50 new jobs.”

W&B Fabricators, Inc. is owned and operated by Mr. Aaron R. “Russ” Boothe. The company, which has operated in Mercer County, West Virginia for more than 24 years, is a fabrication/machine shop operation, providing fabrication and welding services to other industries, including other commercial manufacturing companies, mining and mining-related industries. The company provides services to major coal operators throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Currently, the primary specialty of W&B Fabricators is rebuilding cutter head drums and conveyor booms for continuous miners.

“Bland County is an ideal location for us to relocate and expand our business,” stated “Russ” Booth, Owner/President, W & B Fabricators, Inc. “This is a pro-business community with a workforce that's a perfect match for our needs. We appreciate the assistance from the County of Bland, Virginia's aCorridor, and the Commonwealth in making this project a reality.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Bland County and Virginia’s aCorridor to secure the project for Virginia. Governor McDonnell approved a $100,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Bland County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission also approved $100,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment, training and retraining activities.

“The County of Bland is excited about the opportunities the opening of W&B Fabricators, Inc. brings to the area. They bring the kind of opportunities that we want in our community. It is an industry that will employ a substantial amount of people with strong wages and benefits,” stated Karen Hodock, Bland County Board of Supervisors.

“The Economic Development Authority is extremely proud that W & B Fabricators has decided to join our existing world-class businesses and industries located along the I-77 corridor in beautiful Bland County. The EDA welcomes companies that produce great products such as W&B Fabricators to join the successful manufacturing community right here in the County of Bland,” stated David Dillow, Chairman, Bland County EDA.

“The Tobacco Commission is excited to play a role in this expansion,” said Delegate Terry Kilgore, Chairman of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. “Fifty new jobs will mean a lot to Bland County and the region.

~Oz Clarke, Famed British Wine Critic, Author, Television Personality to Keynote October 28th Event in Richmond ~
Wine Experts, Enthusiasts to Gather for Informative Day of Speakers, Tastings, Open Discussions on the Current, Future State of Virginia Wines

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that he and First Lady Maureen McDonnell will host the second annual Virginia Wine Summit on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.  The event, which will feature famed British wine critic, author, and television personality Oz Clarke, will bring together wine experts and industry leaders from around the country to discuss the current and future state of Virginia wine.  In addition, the summit will feature Virginia wine pairings with culinary offerings, including Virginia oysters.  Panels, tastings, and discussions will be held throughout this day-long event.

Commenting on the event, Governor McDonnell stated, “The continued success of Virginia wine means more good jobs and economic opportunities for Virginians. Sales of Virginia wine are at an all time high with sales up more than 23% since 2010.  The Virginia Wine Summit quickly has become an important component of my administration’s efforts to promote Virginia’s outstanding wines. Because of our efforts, the Commonwealth is becoming the East Coast capital for wine and wine tourism.  We are very fortunate to have the internationally regarded wine expert Oz Clarke visit our great Commonwealth and be our keynote speaker. Oz, who I met in London several years ago on during a trade mission, and the Summit’s other notable speakers will undoubtedly help raise the profile of our wines to an even higher level.”

In addition to Clarke’s (www.ozclarke.com) keynote address, the Virginia Wine Summit will feature some of the nation’s foremost influential wine professionals, including:  Dave McIntyre of The Washington Post; Andrew Hoover, a Virginia wine specialist for Wine Enthusiast; Chef Spike Gjerde of Woodberry Kitchen (Baltimore, MD); Sommelier Charlie Berg of Blue Hill Stone Barns (Pocantico Hills, NY); Sommelier Michael Madrigale of Bar Boulud, Epicierie Boulud & Boulud Sud (New York); Sommelier Steven Grubbs of Empire State South (Atlanta, GA) & Five and Ten (Athens, GA); Sommelier Todd Thrasher of Restaurant Eve (Alexandria, VA); Master of Wine and founder of the Capital Wine School Jay Youmans; and Master Sommelier Kathy Morgan.  These experts will inform an audience filled with winemakers, restaurateurs, sommeliers, connoisseurs, media, wine-shop owners, and other industry professionals.

Summit attendees will take part in panel discussions with topics ranging from wine pairings with signature Virginia foods like ham and peanuts, ageability of Virginia wines, “Bang For Your Buck”, and an in-depth analysis and tastings of key Virginia varietals, such as Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and others. A Virginia wine and oyster panel will be sponsored by the Virginia Tourism Corporation and led by a team of wine professionals that will discuss the pairing, as Virginia’s oysters have also had a record breaking harvest this year.

“The Virginia wine industry is coming off its most successful year ever,” said Todd Haymore, Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry.  “Domestic and international sales reached an all-time high, record numbers of people visited our wineries, and major publications, such as Decanter and the New York Times, featured glowing articles on our wines and wineries.  In addition, last October’s first ever summit, which featured world-renowned wine critic Steven Spurrier, was an overwhelming success that helped bring together a wide variety of wine industry opinion leaders to discuss this fast emerging global wine region. The Governor, First Lady, and I, working in partnership with our wineries and vineyards, are looking to build on that success this year starting with the second annual Virginia Wine Summit, where we’ll proudly showcase our wines with the nation and the world.”

Virginia currently ranks fifth in the number of wineries in the nation with more than 230. Virginia is also tied with Texas as the nation's fifth largest wine grape producing states. According to a 2012 economic impact study, the Virginia wine industry employs more than 4,700 individuals and contributes almost $750 million to the Virginia economy on an annual basis. In addition, more than 1.6 million tourists, a record high, visited Virginia wineries in 2011. Earlier this month Governor McDonnell announced that Virginia wines reached a new record sales level with more than 511,000 cases sold in fiscal year 2013.  That figure represents a five percent increase over the previous fiscal year.  Export sales, mostly to China and Great Britain, increased by 74 percent during the same period, from approximately 3,300 cases to more than 5,800 cases.
