Governor McAuliffe appoints Senator Mary Margaret Whipple to the Virginia Board of Health

Richmond – Today Governor McAuliffe appointed former Senator Mary Margaret Whipple to the Virginia Board of Health. Senator Whipple is currently employed as the Regional Director for Community and Member Outreach for the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association. Senator Whipple will fill the seat vacated by Eric Deaton, who resigned his seat on the board in order to take a position outside of Virginia.

Mary Margaret Whipple represented the 31st District in the Virginia State Senate from 1996 until her retirement in 2012. She chaired the Senate Rules Committee and, as Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus, was the first woman ever to hold a leadership position in the Virginia General Assembly. In the Senate she served on several standing committees, including the Finance committee, as well as legislative commissions including the Virginia Housing Commission. While in the Senate, she was both a member and chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Committee on the Environment. As a member of the Arlington County Board (1983–1995), she worked on transportation issues and served on the WMATA Board of Directors. A former instructor at Northern Virginia Community College, Mrs. Whipple was appointed to the Arlington County School Board in 1976, and was Chair in 1978. She is currently President of the Alliance for Housing Solutions; vice chair of the Virginia Women’s Monument Commission and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Arlington Community Foundation.

Governor McAuliffe Announces 30 New Jobs in the City of Galax

~ Guardian Industries to invest $1.57 million to expand operation~

RICHMOND - Governor Terry McAuliffe announced today that Guardian Industries, the world's largest manufacturer of float glass and fabricated glass products, will invest $1.57 million to expand operations at its Consolidated Glass & Mirror facility in the City of Galax. The project will create 30 new jobs.
Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McAuliffe said, “Consolidated Glass & Mirror and Guardian Industries have been important corporate citizens in the Galax community dating back to 1979. The addition of new manufacturing jobs will help to diversify the region’s industrial base and aids in our efforts to build a new Virginia economy. We are proud that Guardian Industries’ expansion is a part of this movement, and we look forward to the company’s future in Galax.”

“Guardian Industries is a valued contributor to the economic health of Galax, and this expansion and additional investment solidifies the company’s commitment to the region,” said Maurice Jones, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “Galax offers Guardian the business environment and infrastructure it needs to flourish, with room for continued growth. We congratulate the company on more than three decades of success in Virginia.”

Founded in Galax in 1979, Consolidated Glass & Mirror Corporation became a subsidiary of Guardian Industries in 1992. Guardian is a diversified global manufacturing company headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, with leading positions in float glass, fabricated glass products and other building products for commercial, residential and automotive applications. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the City of Galax and Virginia’s aCorridor to secure the project for Virginia. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $125,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds to assist Galax with the project. Funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

“Another expansion of Guardian Industries in Galax is exciting news,” said Galax Mayor C.M. Mitchell. “Helping our local industry succeed is the surest way of revitalizing our economy. The addition of 30 jobs recognizes the ability of our citizens to produce an excellent product. We are thrilled that Guardian’s Consolidated Glass & Mirror plant continues to be a vital part of our local economy.”

Governor McAuliffe Announces 93 New Jobs in Montgomery County

~ Wolverine Advanced Materials to invest $10.6 million to expand operation~

RICHMOND - Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that Wolverine Advanced Materials (Wolverine) will invest $10.625 million to expand its specialty rubber coated materials manufacturing operation in Montgomery County. The company produces high-performance materials used in automotive and industrial noise reduction for brake and sealing applications. Virginia successfully competed against China, Florida and Illinois for the project, which will create 93 new jobs.

Speaking about the announcement, Governor McAuliffe said, “I am thrilled to announce Wolverine’s significant investment in Montgomery County today.  The company will add manufacturing capacity to reach its key growth markets in China and India, using the Port of Virginia as a gateway for its exports.  Increasing export volumes and creating advanced manufacturing jobs are key components of building a new Virginia economy. This project will benefit not only Montgomery County, but the Port and the Commonwealth as a whole.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Montgomery County and the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance to secure the project for Virginia. Governor McAuliffe approved a $250,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Montgomery County with the project. The company will receive benefits from the Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Grant Program. Funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

“This is a banner day for the Town of Blacksburg,” said Mayor Ron Rordam. “For many years Wolverine has been a powerhouse manufacturer of automotive goods in our community and a provider of quality jobs. We’re excited about the prospect of 93 new positions that will benefit the workforce in Blacksburg and the greater New River Valley and congratulate Wolverine on this tremendous investment in business expansion.”

“We congratulate Wolverine on its decision to expand in Montgomery County where the company has had operations since 1974,” said Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Chair Bill Brown. “The addition of advanced manufacturing positions with an average salary above Montgomery County’s prevailing wages is great news for our local economy.”

We are proud to be Wolverine’s gateway to international trade as the company increases exports while creating new jobs and economic investment in Montgomery County.”
