Benedict Arnold, Hero, Patriot, Tyrant, Traitor, His Story

Liberty's Kids, episode number 32.  Benedict Arnold.  The story of a man who at one time was a real hero to the American People and a great leader.  He turned traitor to the American people but became a hero of the British and still remains one while remaining a traitor to Americans.

We have created a very special e-book for this post and our Liberty Education Series here on GVLN.  This e-book contains very rare documents and pictures of not only Benedict Arnold, but of his wife and daughter.  His commission as singed by John Hancock and other very rare documents.

You can enlarge this document by hitting the icon in the lower right hand corner of the container.  Free downloads are available on this from our SlideShare site.  You will need to sign in with either your Facebook account or LinkedIn account or sign up as a free user.

Captain Molly - The Fierce and Beloved Woman of the American Revolution

Liberty's Kids episode number 19.  Captain Molly.  We did some digging to find the real story about Captain Molly.  Again, you can see how well researched these episodes are.  Finding the matching content can be a real challenge but we believe we have found the rest of what we need to continue to keep up.

MOLLY MAGUIRE AT MONMOUTH
WILLIAM COLLINS

[Sidenote: June 28, 1778] The battle of Monmouth was indecisive, but the Americans held the field, and the British retreated and remained inactive for the rest of the summer.

On the bloody field of Monmouth
Flashed the guns of Greene and Wayne.
Fiercely roared the tide of battle,
Thick the sward was heaped with slain.
Foremost, facing death and danger,
Hessian, horse, and grenadier,
In the vanguard, fiercely fighting,
Stood an Irish Cannonier.

Loudly roared his iron cannon,
Mingling ever in the strife,
And beside him, firm and daring,
Stood his faithful Irish wife.
Of her bold contempt of danger
Greene and Lee's Brigades could tell,
Every one knew "Captain Molly,"
And the army loved her well.

Surged the roar of battle round them,
Swiftly flew the iron hail,
Forward dashed a thousand bayonets,
That lone battery to assail.
From the foeman's foremost columns
Swept a furious fusillade,
Mowing down the massed battalions
In the ranks of Greene's Brigade.

Fast and faster worked the gunner,
Soiled with powder, blood, and dust,
English bayonets shone before him,
Shot and shell around him burst;
Still he fought with reckless daring,
Stood and manned her long and well,
Till at last the gallant fellow
Dead—beside his cannon fell.

With a bitter cry of sorrow,
And a dark and angry frown,
Looked that band of gallant patriots
At their gunner stricken down.
"Fall back, comrades, it is folly
Thus to strive against the foe."
"No! not so," cried Irish Molly;
"We can strike another blow."

* * * * *

Quickly leaped she to the cannon,
In her fallen husband's place,
Sponged and rammed it fast and steady,
Fired it in the foeman's face.
Flashed another ringing volley,
Roared another from the gun;
"Boys, hurrah!" cried gallant Molly,
"For the flag of Washington."

Greene's Brigade, though shorn and shattered,
Slain and bleeding half their men,
When they heard that Irish slogan,
Turned and charged the foe again.
Knox and Wayne and Morgan rally,
To the front they forward wheel,
And before their rushing onset
Clinton's English columns reel.

Still the cannon's voice in anger
Rolled and rattled o'er the plain,
Till there lay in swarms around it
Mangled heaps of Hessian slain.
"Forward! charge them with the bayonet!"
'Twas the voice of Washington,
And there burst a fiery greeting
From the Irish woman's gun.

Monckton falls; against his columns
Leap the troops of Wayne and Lee,
And before their reeking bayonets
Clinton's red battalions flee.
Morgan's rifles, fiercely flashing,
Thin the foe's retreating ranks,
And behind them onward dashing
Ogden hovers on their flanks.

Fast they fly, these boasting Britons,
Who in all their glory came,
With their brutal Hessian hirelings
To wipe out our country's name.
Proudly floats the starry banner,
Monmouth's glorious field is won,
And in triumph Irish Molly
Stands beside her smoking gun.

There seems to be a conflict in the last name between the above story and the picture below.

We Have A New General In Command of America Now

Today on Liberty's Kids, Washington Takes Command.  For the most part, Liberty's Kids is a very well researched project presenting a well balanced view of our history.  Not always the best presentations but one must consider the audience it was designed for.  Overall, it has the ability to teach much needed history lessons to all Americans.  Least we forget, our freedoms were paid for in Blood!

7th Virginia Return To Gloucester - American Revolution This Saturday

The 7th Virginia regiment returns to Gloucester this Saturday, May 25th, 2013.  The volunteers interpret colonial era military movements and demonstrate musket firing as well as canon fire.  This is a once a year event and is only for one day.  If you have never had the opportunity to see these demonstrations, we highly recommend them.

The volunteers all recreate a very authentic colonial militia camp and atmosphere.  The 7th Virginia regiment even has a doctor on hand interpreting colonial medical care.

The above video gives you an idea of some of the demonstrations.

We checked the weather forecast and we are looking at a nice cool overcast day. Temperatures in the lower 70's.  No rain.  Good day to attend this event.

The good doctor is always a hit as he has a great display and really knows his medicinal history.  Time travel is possible, so come out and support the 7th Virginia Regiment and travel back in time to America's colonial era.  You won't be disappointed.
