Miss Virginia 2013 - Rosemary Willis - Going for Miss America 2014 Title In September

Rosemary Willis ’13 has much in common with the typical student at the College of William and Mary. She is highly involved in a variety of campus activities, including the Accidentals, Baptist Collegiate Ministries and Tribe Fellowship. She is also a certified Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer, and she taught Body Pump at the College’s Student Recreation Center.
But there is one major difference between Willis and the average College student: After competing in pageants since her freshman year, she was crowned Miss Virginia 2012.
Willis would have graduated with the class of 2013, but she is taking the year off to fulfill her responsibilities as Miss Virginia.
“This is a full time job, and it’s sad [to miss my class’s senior year], but at the same time it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Willis said.
For many, the word ‘pageant’ is synonymous with beauty contest, but the stereotypes surrounding such titles and competitions don’t capture all that Willis’ year off entails.
“I’m not 5’ 10” with long legs and acting as a model — that’s not what Miss Virginia Miss America does,” Willis said. “Talent is 35 [percent of your score], interview is 25 — so really I’m more of a PR person, someone who can be in a business meeting with intellectuals … and go get dirty playing with kids and teaching them about good decision-making.”
While Miss America originated as a beauty contest, it has evolved into something much more well-rounded.
“There’s a big difference between Miss America and Miss USA,” Willis’ boyfriend Ryan Ferrera ’13 said. “As Miss Virginia, she’s part of Miss America, which is about service, scholarship and leadership.”
In fact, the Miss America Organization is the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year alone, the organization gave over $45 million in cash and scholarship funds. The opportunity for scholarship money initially drew Willis to the pageant world. As Miss Roanoke Valley, Willis received $3,000 and, at the state level, she won $18,000 for school expenses.
“You have girls from medical school to Ph.D. programs — they’re very motivated women, and the organization is looking to support them in that and open doors,” Ferrera said.
Supporting one’s platform is another key focus of Miss America. Willis’ platform is “Get Moving Today for a Healthier Tomorrow,” an interest shaped in part by her experiences at the College minoring in Kinesiology & Health Sciences and in teaching Body Pump classes.
“She’s very enthusiastic and a great voice on campus for fitness [and] caring for your body,” Willis’ roommate Delaney Janson ’13 said.
Her passion for healthy living also developed through service. Willis worked with a local childhood obesity program through Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA. Each week she met with a group of about 10 children and combined health education with fun workouts that encouraged teamwork.
“That really kicked off my platform work because I didn’t start competing until freshman year in college, and [by then] this was obvious because this is what I live and this is what I love,” Willis said.

New Xbox One Piece Of Junk With Serious Security Flaws

Most military won’t be able to use new Xbox One overseas or on deployments

Posted on: 10:21 am, June 17, 2013, by updated on: 02:33pm, June 17, 2013

Microsoft’s much-anticipated new console has just been unveiled, but most in the military will not be able to use it away from home.
The new console must check in online with Microsoft once a day, and new product registration limitations mean that its games will not be playable in most locations outside of the U.S.
“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection,” an Xbox spokesperson tells the Military Times.
And it gets worse for on-the-go troops. The Xbox One:
■ Can play only in Xbox One-friendly countries. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a regular, reliable Internet connection while overseas, you’ll have to be in one of 21 countries included in Microsoft’s server network. So, if you’re stationed in, say, Germany, Italy or Great Briatin, you’re good to go. But if you’re based in Japan, Kuwait or Afghanistan, you’re out of luck.
■ Will have region-locked games. Games bought in the U.S. can be activated only in the U.S. That means no more ripping open the latest title that just arrived in a care package from home while you’re deployed. And forget about buying games locally when overseas — if your Xbox Live account isn’t tied to the region when you activate a game, it won’t play.
■ Serious security concerns. Even when the Xbox One is in sleep mode, its built-in microphone can always listen in. It’s a feature developers say will provide quick voice-command access to games and apps — but that could spook commanders who might worry the always-connected device could also capture more than just idle chit-chat among troops.
“Microsoft has single handedly alienated the entire military. And not just the U.S. military — the militaries of the entire world,” says naval aviator Jay Johnson.

Microsoft has replied to repeated questions by saying that people who want to game offline should use the older Xbox 360 instead.

Notes:  If the military considers the new system a security threat, you should too.  And Microsoft wants you to pay to open serious security flaws in your home?  Just vote no by refusing to buy the new system when it comes out.

America's Worst Charities: Five of top 50 named based in Maryland, Virginia

Five of the 50 charities identified in a Tampa Bay Times/Center for Investigative Reporting investigation into just how little money they actually give to the needy are based in Maryland or Virginia.
The entire investigation, which was published on Friday, concluded that the 50 named on their list of America as a whole actually donated just 4 percent of funds raised to those they say they serve. Six of them never actually gave any money at all to the people they say they're serving.
Many of the charities included in the list are based in Florida, but out of the 50, five them are based in Towson, Silver Spring, Alexandria, Ashburn and Falls Church.
Of the five, the investigation concluded that the American Association for the Deaf and Blind, a Silver Spring-based outfit that the Times and CIR report has raised at least $1 million every year since 1984, committed just 0.1 percent of that money into direct cash aid.
The locally-based charities on the list include:

4American Breast Cancer FoundationTowson5.3 percent
16National Caregiving FoundationAlexandria3.5 percent
18United States Deputy Sheriffs' AssociationAshburn0.6 percent
32American Association for the Deaf and BlindSilver Spring0.1 percent
40Circle of Friends for American VeteransFalls Church6.5 percent

The two representatives of the American Breast Cancer Foundation who are blamed for much of the organizations problems did not respond to the Tampa Bay Times' questions.
The executive director of National Caregiving Foundation did not respond to inquiries by the Tampa Bay Times.
The president of the United States Deputy Sheriffs' Association did not return numerous phone calls made by the Tampa Bay Times.
The American Association for the Deaf and Blind did not respond for comment.
Circle of Friends for American Veterans' founder Brian Hampton defended the charity, saying he believes the organization is more effective by promoting awareness of homelessness than housing homeless vets. He also defended the organizations' use of telemarketers because he says telemarketing call centers are cost-effective.
