VIMS Launches Its Cutting-Edge Seawater Lab

A cutting-edge, $2.8 million seawater lab got its official launch over the weekend, giving students and scientists more ideal conditions under which to study marine life.

The Eastern Shore Seawater Laboratory is unique for being built mere feet from a coastal inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in the seaside village of Wachapreague in Accomack County.

"The sharks are right here, the lab is right here, the seawater's right here," marine scientist Rich Brill said in a prepared statement. "If you're working with sharks or other coastal and open-ocean species, this is the place to be."

Brill is a researcher with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point, which is affiliated with the College of William & Mary. The new lab is part of VIMS' Eastern Shore Laboratory.

Shop owner suing Sheriff's Office says deputies 'emptied the accounts'

NEWPORT NEWS— 

After the Newport News Sheriff's Office seized hundreds of thousands of dollars from Jayson Mickle and several of his companies last summer, the tobacco shop owner says he didn't initially have the cash to pay his workers.

According to court documents, Newport News sheriff's deputies confiscated $611,388 in cash — as well as a 2011 Ford Mustang — from Mickle and his companies as part of a June 2011 investigation into the suspected sale of synthetic marijuana from his shops.

The deputies began the investigation after a new state law went into effect three months earlier banning synthetic marijuana, sometimes known as "Spice."

Shop owner suing Sheriff's Office says deputies 'emptied the accounts'  Okay, I just don't get this.  This shop sells synthetic drugs, not that I care, people are going to get stuff no matter whether it's legal or illegal.  Makes for a stronger case to legalize the real stuff, but that's another story.  Yet, we report on a woman who has been illegally raided by the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office as well as Animal Control and hardly anyone cares?

  At least Newport News found some evidence.  In this Gloucester Case, the county made up evidence and we have shown that yet the Daily Press pays no attention to it at all.  I really don't get it.

Warren Beats Ledbetter By Huge Margin

Present acting Sheriff, Darrell Warren beats Jim Ledbetter by a huge margin yesterday.  Warren received 82.5% of the vote to Jim Ledbetter's 17.5% of the vote.  This was only the republican primary and not the official election for Sheriff.  We still have the real vote to come in November.  Why Ledbetter wanted to run for Sheriff after resigning last December is a bit odd anyway.

Gloucester Sheriff's Office Produced False Meta Data File On Audio

The above picture is from the 911 call and is the audio meta data as produced in a CDA file by the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office in the case we have been covering.  The meta data is a false report.  For the incident that occurred on May 4th, 2010, this meta data says that the recording took place on December 31st, 1994 at 8:00 PM.  Now how could that possibly be?  The Sheriff's Office is expected to comply with the laws no different than anyone else.  In fact, it is their job to exceed expectations and lead the way.  Why then are they producing false meta data on digital files?   We have said that the files were altered and this is just more proof of those alterations.  A CD audio file is in fact a digital file.  And once again, we see that Monique Donner, Esq, Ted Wilmot, Esq, and Michael T Soberic, Esq, did not do their jobs in checking the facts in this case.  The meta data should have been looked at and highly questioned then thrown out as having no validity unless the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office could have shown a sound reason why the meta data was so far off.  Then the case should have been moved to a latter date until the Gloucester Sheriff's Office could produce a legal file.  But that couldn't be done because the recording was altered and illegally used anyway.
