Gloucester, VA Edgehill Texaco Service Station Historic Landmark?

It's interesting that we are all told that the Edgehill, Texaco,  Service Station is some sort of historic landmark.  Why is anyone buying this?  That is a really good question.  A thought had occurred, if this gas station was really of any historic concern, then why hasn't Texaco stepped up to offer some form of support to help this project along?  So we started digging.  What we were told is that the reason this place is being called an historic location is because it is the oldest service station of it's type that ran the longest in the history of Texaco. (BS meter anyone?)

First off, who cares?  That is like arguing that you can never put anyone into the old Wal Mart because that was the first Wal Mart ever built in Gloucester, therefore it's an historic Landmark.  The old Roses which is now the Boys Club never should have been allowed as that was the first Roses to ever come to Gloucester.  The arguments do not fly.  So why are we buying the same lousy argument to this old Texaco station?

In 1911 Texaco opened its first filling station in Brooklyn, New York.  So this is not the first Texaco in the nation by any means.  As far as the longest running of it's type?  Give it a few years, that will change.  So where exactly is the historical value in this area?  Your guess is as good as ours and we would sure like to see the evidence as to where that so called value is.

Tomorrow we will be covering more on this property, opening up even more questions and concerns everyone should have.  Stay tuned.

Courts Want $9,250 Per Pirated Song, But BMG Will Settle For $20

With the “six strikes” initiative on it’s way to the United States – where ISPs will begin warning Internet users illegally sharing copyrighted material, and then restricting their Internet access after six warnings – major labels and publishers seem to be moving closer to what they feel will be an effective anti-piracy campaign. However, the people over at BMG Rights Management don’t seem to be completely satisfied and have begun seeking out settlementsagainst file sharers – not in court for thousands of dollars, but rather for just $20 online.

BMG is the fourth-largest music publisher in the world (based on revenue) and is home to artists the likes of Bruno Mars, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, John Legend, Outcast, will.i.am, MGMT and several others. The company does not seem to feel that the ‘education’ approach to the “six strikes” initiative is enough for their clients and are now attempting to generate revenues from alleged file sharers, as reported by TorrentFreak.

Yet you can stream in radio through the Internet and record any song you want from that stream.  You can easily record regular radio as well.  Any song you want.  However, you are infringing on the rights of the copyright HOLDERS.  You can copy TV programs to your hard drive on your computer or TiVo, VHS and even DVD.  But again, not legally?  Wait, you can do these things but you can not download these things even though everyone and their brother is hosting them all over the Internet.  The Internet police are now watching everyone and everything we all do.

It is illegal to circumvent copyright protection in the United States yet circumvention of copyrights for CD's software and films are sold everywhere such as Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, Staples, Office Max, Office Depot and more.  Everyone sells the circumvention technology that is illegal to use in the US.  Is anyone confused yet?  What messages are we all being told every day?  You can not do this and here is how you do it and where to buy it.  By the way, if we catch you there is a fine plus jail time.  But no one is watching as we watch you follow our instructions on what to do that you are not doing.  Okay?  Huh?  No one can get this story straight.

GVLN - Are Torrents Destroying Hollywood? Part 4

Blu-ray disc front

In our last article we left off with the promise that we would explain what is legal and what is not legal in the way of films.  Here is what is legal.  It is legal to make one backup copy of any disk that you own.  Whether that disk is a video, music software or what have you.  Now here is the catch.  Even though you have the right to make one backup copy of any disk you own, you do NOT have the right to break any copyright protection on any disk here in the USA.  That means that when you buy a DVD or a Blu Ray movie, most all of them contain some form of copyright protection.  So you do not have the right to make a copy of those disks by breaking the copyrighted protection on those disks.

Now, if you can make a copy of those disks while keeping the copyright protection on them, then you are fine.  However, most all of the software out there that allows you to make backup copies of movies or software work by stripping off the copyright encryption that blocks you from making a copy of those disks.  When you backup a copy of say a Hollywood film, you have removed the encryption therefore violating the software owners rights.

To date we have yet to find one software program that allows you to copy a disk and still maintain the original copyright protection.  We have heard of one, but have not been able to locate it.  So what does one do?  We have recently learned that through Wal Mart and their on line business, VUDU, you can now take a copy of any DVD you own and for a fee, have a digital copy made and stored on line.  The digital copy is good on any device.

The draw back?  Wal Mart has to have agreements with the studio for that particular DVD title.  If Wal Mart does not have an agreement with that movie studio or for that title?  No copy.  CLICK HERE to see more about the service.
On the bright side?  Wal Mart is the first company to be doing this and your purchase remains in the cloud for many years to come.  The fees are very low starting at $2.00 per copy.

The bottom line is this.  If you purchase a DVD or Blu Ray disk, software or music that contains copy protection and you also buy software to crack that protection to make copies just for your own use and do not distribute any of the copies in any way including lending them to friends, then you will be breaking the law, but no one is going to come after you for it.

Maintaining backup copies is a good idea.  A new Blu Ray title is not cheap.  If you want to take a few disks with you on vacation it is a lot cheaper to have copies stolen than to have your originals stolen.  There isn't much of a market for copies of films already released.  If you are just making a digital version for your PSP, it's up to you to decide which is the best way to go.  If it's in the cloud through VUDU, you still have it in the cloud and can have it on your PSP as well.

Our final article will be on whether or not the disk is dead.

Gloucester Wal Mart

Technically speaking, what you see in this video is a big no no. Wal Mart does not allow cameras to be used in their stores and if they had caught the person who did this, they would have made sure this file never made it to this point. My opinion? It was not done in anyway that would harm Wal Mart, so I have no issues posting it here, in case you have not seen it.
