Gloucester, VA - Vitaminwater revealed as non-healthy beverage by Coca-Cola's own lawyers (opinion)

(NaturalNews) Do you ever wonder things like "Who is actually gullible enough to think that Vitaminwater is healthy?" Although that question may seem demeaning or even arrogant, it turns out that the Coca-Cola company (which owns the Vitaminwater brand) is essentially asking that exact question.

How so? In response to a recent lawsuit against Coca-Cola filed by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), Coke's attorneys replied in court briefings that, "...no consumer could reasonably be misled into thinking vitaminwater was a healthy beverage."

Except, of course, millions of consumers were misled into believing precisely that. This illusion was helped in no small part by Coca-Cola's advertising of Vitaminwater, which blatantly positions it as a health-enhancing beverage. Even the name itself implies that the product is made solely out of vitamins and water.

But of course it isn't.

"Sugarwater" might be a better name

If Vitaminwater were accurately named, it would actually be called Sugarwater. Its first two ingredients are, not surprisingly, sugar and water (the sugar coming in the form of crystalline fructose, a processed sweetener that has been linked to health problems) (http://www.naturalnews.com/029371_fructose_health.html).

In addition to the sugar and water, Vitaminwater contains a smattering of synthetic vitamin chemicals that any informed health consumer probably wouldn't want to ingest. So in reality, Vitaminwater is really sugar water with the addition of synthetic chemicals that happen to be called "vitamins" (but which are not the natural, plant-based nutrients your body would greatly prefer).

So what we have now with Vitaminwater is a beverage that's positioned and marketed as a health-enhancing beverage, yet its own corporate lawyers dismiss any notion that the beverage is "healthy." How, then, can Coca-Cola get away with advertising Vitaminwater as a healthy beverage?

Simple: Because corporations use advertisements to lie to consumers. And virtually no one in the history of corporate advertising has mastered the art of deception better than Coca-Cola -- a company whose products have contributed to untold numbers of diabetes victims while being positioned as cool, hip drinks that make you feel energized or inspired.

Coca-Cola isn't really in the business of selling beverages, you see. It's in the business of selling the illusion of happiness in a bottle or a can. Buy their products, say the advertisements, and you too can feel happiness (or freedom, or sexiness or whatever). But what Coca-Cola delivers isn't really happiness at all: Many of Coke's products deliver the liquid sugars, artificial chemicalsweeteners and bone-dissolving acids (like phosphoric acid) that promote disease and suffering. And no reasonable person would equate degenerative disease with happiness.

Misleading name, misleading labels

Speaking of disease, how much sugar is actually in Vitaminwater? A lot more than you might think: While the label claims only 13 grams of sugar per serving, one bottle of vitamin water is actually 2.5 servings, meaning that you're chugging down 32 grams of liquid sugars with every bottle.

That's just one of the many "deceptive and unsubstantiated claims" pointed out by CSPI in its lawsuit against Coca-Cola. It is this lawsuit that resulted in Coke's lawyers making the incredible statement that no reasonable person could possibly conclude Vitaminwater was a healthy beverage.

Lawyers, by the way, can argue absolutely anything -- even if it makes no sense. And they can do it with a straight face, too. If you're looking for a professional liar, hire a lawyer. Coca-Cola seems to already have its share working at their headquarters in Atlanta.

Using its lawyers, Coca-Cola tried to argue its way out of this CSPI lawsuit, but that effort was rejected by the courts. "A federal judge has denied Coca-Cola's motion to dismiss a lawsuit over what the CSPI says are deceptive and unsubstantiated claims on the company's "vitaminwater" line of soft drinks," touts an article on the CSPI website (http://www.cspinet.org/new/201007231.html )

That same announcement goes on to quote Judge John Gleeson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, who says "The names of the drinks, along with other statements on the label have the potential to reinforce a consumer's mistaken belief that the product is comprised of only vitamins and water."

CSPI's litigation director Steve Gardner adds, "For too long, Coca-Cola has been exploiting Americans' desire to eat and drink more healthfully by deceiving them into thinking that vitaminwater can actually prevent disease. In fact, vitaminwater is no more than non-carbonated soda, providing unnecessary added sugar and contributing to weight gain, obesity, diabetes, and other diseases. We look forward to representing all Americans whom Coke has deceived.

London 2012: Inquiry after unofficial condoms found in Olympic village

London 2012 are investigating how a bucket of unofficial condoms found its way into the athletes' village without official consent.
The Australian BMX cyclist Caroline Buchanan tweeted a photograph of the bucket, which featured a sign reading "Kangaroos condoms, for the gland downunder", and a picture of a boxing kangaroo.
She joked that bucket seemed to back up rumours that the village becomes a hot bed of activity as thousands of competitors complete their events and celebrate after years of working to get to the Olympics – tweeting: "Haha, the rumours are true. Olympic village."
Barcelona started the trend of supplying free condoms to athletes when the Spanish city held the Olympics in 1992, with the International Olympic Committee endorsing the move.
The London Olympic organisers provided 150,000 free condoms in dispensers for the 10,800 athletes at the Games, supplied by Durex which paid for the supply rights.
A Locog spokeswoman said they were trying to find out who distributed the Kangaroo condoms, with the container shown to hold condoms from Durex's rivals Ansell Ltd, an Australian company, and Pasante, a private British firm.
She said athletes and officials were allowed to bring products into the village for their personal use.

You just have to love the Olympics.  We are not watching any of the events and have zero plans to in the near future.  The above story is just stupid.

Gloucester supervisors look to clean up local waters

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday night moving forward with the establishment of No Discharge zones in Gloucester County's waters.
Establishing No Discharge zones in Gloucester County means boaters would be prohibited from dumping human sewage in rivers, streams and creeks. The county's Go Green Committee began working on the process last year before coming before the supervisors for approval to continue the work.
The zone areas would include the Piankatank River, Mobjack Bay and the York River and all of their tributaries. Establishing the zones on some of the waterways — including the Piankatank and upper North rivers and Adams and Poropotank creeks and Morris Bay — will require coordination with neighboring counties.
Phil Olekszyk, a member of the Go Green Committee said boaters whose vessels are equipped with marine sanitation devices can discharge without penalty in Gloucester waters. He showed a map that highlighted thousands of acres ofGloucester rivers, streams, creeks and bays that are off-limits to shellfish harvesting due to polluted waters.
Click Here for the rest of the story from the Daily Press.

We wish the board good luck with this.  How do they propose to stop people from dumping?  Will dumping police now be patrolling all the water ways?  This looks like a forced business that people now have to use if they want to own and use a boat.   More of your freedoms being taken away in the name of environmental correctness.  Just wear orange to protest the go green movement.

Gloucester, VA - Tracking down toll violators a costly operation

State study says VDOT loses out on more than $10,000 per month in revenue from toll violators at the Coleman Bridge in Gloucester

GLOUCESTER — About every seven minutes a motorist passes through the Route 17 toll booths at the George P. Coleman Bridge without paying, a scene that repeats itself more than 75,000 times a year.
The numbers of Coleman Bridge tolls processed in 2011 is a staggering 5.5 million, an average of more than 15,000 per day, according to figures provided by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Motorists who run the toll booths without paying account for only a fraction of the total number of vehicles driving northbound on Route 17 into Gloucester.
Yet each time a motorist zips through the toll booths without paying — it happens on average more than 200 times per day — the action triggers a process of tracking down violators that has become a lucrative source of income for a Hampton-based firm, and a potentially devastating tally of fines and fees for drivers who are repeat offenders.
A Daily Press analysis of data and documents provided viaFreedom of Information Act request to VDOT and the state court system, and interviews with drivers — who in some cases had hundreds of violations — reveals the lengths the state goes to track down toll booth violators. The examination also shows how costly a relatively minor infraction can ultimately become for drivers running the toll booths.

Gloucester resident Crystal Donoflio is among the thousands of motorists who have run the Coleman Bridge toll booths. She appeared in court in March in connection with toll violations dating back to 2000. Court records show 293 toll violations for Donoflio.
Donoflio said she had an EZPass toll-collection sensor at the time, but on some occasions, there wasn't enough money linked to her account when she crossed the bridge into the county. She added that she is behind on paying, is unemployed and is trying to get on disability.
"I'll be glad when it's all over," she said.

GVLN - Twitter confronts ethics of commercial pressures in wake of Guy Adams 'mess'

Image representing Twitter as depicted in Crun...

The social media site took a hit to its reputation as a home to free speech as the fight for internet freedom enters new stage.

In January 2011 Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, together with the site's "trust and safety" arbiter Alex Macgillivray, posted a paean to freedom of expression under the portentous title: The Tweets Must Flow. They promised they would respect everyone's human right to unimpeded speech, vowing only to remove tweets that were illegal, spam or in breach of privacy.
Fine words. But this week the tweets stopped flowing for one of Twitter's users. When Guy Adams, the Independent's Los Angeles correspondent, went to issue his latest gobbet of wisdom in 140 characters on Monday he found his Twitter stream well and truly dammed.
The suspension of Adams' account, and its reinstatement on Tuesday, led to a storm of indignation culminating with an apology from Twitter. "We did mess up," admitted Macgillivray – now Twitter's general counsel – "and we will actively work to ensure this does not happen again".
The most toxic aspect of the affair was the whiff of a commercial incentive. Adams was blocked after he posted a succession of tweets heavily critical of NBC for its tape-delayed broadcasts of the Olympics. When it was revealed that Twitter and NBC had entered into a business partnership for the Games, and that Twitter had tipped off the TV network to Adams's tweets, prompting the complaint that would lead to his suspension, the Twittersphere turned blue with rage.
Twitter's quick and abject apology may have nipped in the bud the suspicion that it censored Adams for commercial gain, but doubts will remain. "The whole incident reveals how easily people can be silenced in social media for commercial reasons if we are not vigilant in preventing it," says Rebecca MacKinnon, author of Consent of the Networked who sits on the board of Global Network Initiative, a body that fights internet censorship.

Gloucester, VA Chick-Fil-A Continues In The News

Chick-fil-A Kiss-Ins Divide LGBT Movement

Carly McGehee, 24, had been trying for months to plan a "kiss-in" to protest fried-chicken chain Chick-fil-A's long history of donating money to groups that oppose same-sex marriage and promote conversion therapy, a controversial practice intended to "cure" gay people.
But there was no real catalyst for the event until now.
This summer, the company's chief executive Dan Cathy gave a pair of interviews saying he was “guilty as charged” of supporting “the biblical definition of the family unit" and that gay marriage invites "God's judgment on our nation."
The company now sits at the center of a furious debate over same-sex marriage, gay rights and free speech while some politicians rally around it and others urge the company to stay out of their cities. McGehee, of Dallas, thought the time was right.
On Friday night, she estimates about 15,000 same-sex supporters will show up at Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide to snap photos, and hug, kiss or hold hands with someone of the same-sex. One of her main goals for the event is to give hope to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth living in the South, who hear messages condemning gay marriage more often than words of support, McGehee said.
"Tonight is for those kids that are growing up in, say, a small town in Texas, like I did, so that they can see that they're not different, that they're loved and accepted and they shouldn't be ashamed of who they are," McGehee said. She also hopes to show the world that the American people "aren't going stand for discrimination and intolerance."

As I have said before, let those in the gay community convert to the Wicca religion or the Satanist religion.  Those are the two religions that recognize same sex marriages.  We do not need to create extra laws for minorities that are not already in existence.  I have a zero sum issue for gay rights.  Gay marriage is not a gay right according to the state.  Want to argue that on the proper end?  1st Amendment, to the bill of rights, Congress shall make no law respecting establishment of religion nor  prohibiting the free exercise thereof.  Gay marriage is not a Christian value, therefore the need to recognize it as such does not exist.
It is a recognized value under Wicca and Satanism.  Paganism may also recognize it as well.  Therein lies the answers to this dilemma.  The state is under no obligation whatsoever to recognize the issues and to do so is to go against the Constitution of the Untied States and also the Bill of Rights of the US.  If gay people wish to get married, then let them follow the paths where it is accepted.  No issues there.
Gay marriage is a privilege, not a right.  Now here is what is really going on with the protests.  It's an attempt to silence the freedom of speech made by the owner of the Chick-Fil-A franchise as well as a very blatant attack on Christianity itself.  Just because you do not like his view does not give you the right to attack him for it.  Any gay person who protests the owners right to the freedom of speech attacks themselves for the right to be gay openly.  Think about it.
