Help Save The Edge Hill Service Station

The Fairfield Foundation has purchased and will be restoring the Edge Hill Service Station on Gloucester's Main street and the corner of route 14 going towards Mathews. The foundation has a sign up in front of the building to Help Save The Edge Hill Service Station and has a web site address you can visit. CLICK HERE to visit the Fairfield Foundation. We have learned that the Fairfield Foundation is in contact with the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust and both can always use your support through donations as this is how these foundations stay alive and maintain our history and past. We look forward to the day when the old service station is restored and brings more appeal to Main Street.

Live Feed Posts And Cutting Edge News

If you have been watching us of late you are starting to see new trends in what we are doing. We are moving into new areas of bringing you news before anyone else or bringing you news no one else is even touching. We are also moving into bringing you live feed posts. The live feed posts are exactly as stated. We post events and bring you pictures and if possible, video, while an event is going on. Part of the reason for this is we hope you will join us at the event, but if you can't, you can see what is going on at the time of the event. Radio can't show you what is going on and TV is being ignored even more by the day. We are now searching for a good way to stream live video as an event goes on but so far, the costs are rather high and with this being new, we can not yet justify the costs.

The video we are posting at the time of the event is about 40 minutes old into the event. We are working on kicking that time up. The posts with pictures run about 10 minutes as we have to shrink the pictures before posting for faster loading times. We will now start giving you notice 24 hours in advance of our next live feed postings so that you may join in and see if this event is one you should not miss and hurry on down to join us. We are working closely with a number of people in the county to ensure we know about all the events ahead of time and working on keeping our calender clear to be at them all. Modern technology. You have to love it.

Wal Mart Shoppers Treated To Smoke Sewer Test Today

Shoppers at the Gloucester Wal Mart and Home Depot were treated to a smoke sanitation sewer test this morning at about 10:15 AM until about 11:30 AM, June 18th, 2010. The test looked like smoke bombs going off all over the place and the stench was pretty bad. I for one question the safety of such testing as one could smell the sewer waste and it gave me a sore throat despite the fact I never went into the direction the smoke was blowing. If one can smell the sewer waste, then a certain amount of waste contamination is entering the atmosphere.

Chase The Rainbow

Last week while we were out taking a series of photographs, we caught this magnificent rainbow that went from Gloucester, across the river, all the way to Yorktown. What we didn't find were any leprechaun's or a pot of gold. Maybe next time.

Summer Girl, 72 Ft Ship Goes Up In Smoke

We were shocked this week when we saw the new edition of the Gazette - Journal newspaper. On the front cover of the paper is a picture of Summer Girl, a 72 foot long ship that went up in blazes on Monday. We were at the Marina on Saturday and this ship had caught our eye along with a few others. We took a series of pictures of the ships that had our fancy. The above slide show starts out with pictures of Summer Girl so you can see what she looked like before the fire.

She was listed as having been from Smithfield, Virginia. Even though she was an older ship, she was still a beauty and well maintained. The 35 foot sport boat next to her we did not photograph but we did get pictures of the ship on the other side of her which was the Lazzara. That was my pick for the day as my favorite little Yacht. Our condolences to the owner(s) of this ship.

VSO To Play Gloucester County Concert May 15th, 2010

Hey everyone. The Virginia Symphony orchestra is scheduled to play here this weekend, Saturday, May 15th, 2010 up by the courthouse. The concert begins at 8:00 PM, so bring your own chairs or blankets. These folks always put on a great performance and we go see them every chance we get. This rare video is all we are allowed to use. You can not film or record their concerts in anyway. They have been kind enough to allow us to keep this and one other video up on line because we only use it to promote them. There are no other videos up anywhere on line of the VSO. This is a great county event that we never want to loose, so come out for a wonderful time and show your support. At the present time, there isn't a known rain date, but the present weather forecast calls for a chilly but rain free evening. So dress warmly. We don't want anyone getting chilled.

5 Bucks Fresh "Moldy" Pizza?

This is an article I hate writing for the simple reason that I like the folks over at 5 Bucks Pizza. At one point they made the best white pizza in Gloucester. However, consistently for the past year, their $5.00 pizza taste like moldy cheese. It also smells like moldy cheese. I complained about this to them several times but they always deny it. The last few times we got pizza there, it made us sick. So we stopped going to this establishment and have been in search of a good pizza place since. There are plenty of places where the pizza isn't bad, it's just not great pizza. When we have to have great pizza, it's usually off to Yorktown. No one in Gloucester musters up that we have found yet. So our search is on. 7-Eleven's 90 second pizza isn't fully cooked in 90 seconds and is horrible. So that too is a pass. Who makes great pizza in Gloucester?

Gloucester Burger King Now Serving Rancid Food?

We decided to grab a quick bite and stopped off at the local Burger King. I ordered the fish sandwich. It was dark brown and dripping with grease. It tasted nasty. I brought it back and the staff was more than courteous and made another fresh sandwich for me. That too was just as greasy, dark brown and foul tasting. The reason for this is simple. Rancid oil. I had to bring the sandwich back yet one more time and they offered to make yet another one. I declined the offer and they offered me anything else off their menu. I accepted and got a burger this time. Not going into the deep fryer there.

The staff at the restaurant was more than friendly and kind, but what gets me is when owners of a place like this try to pinch pennies and use oil for well past it's expiration. This is not only dangerous, it's potentially deadly. (See Dr Mercola's site on rancid oils). The problem with fast food oils is it goes rancid very fast. This is a major cause behind heart attacks, strokes and cancer according to health officials everywhere. If you frequent this establishment, you may want to avoid anything deep fried until they resolve this issue. Which leads me to my next article on 5 Bucks Pizza.

Blimp For Directv Seen Over Gloucester, Pictures Posted Here

A Directv blimp was flying over Gloucester County today. It was above the old Wal Mart shopping center where Ollie's and Tech Zone are located. I would imagine that they may have picked this spot because Tech Zone is a Directv distributor. Either way it was cool to see. At first we thought it was the Goodyear blimp. But when we blew up the picture, we saw who it really was. (When you don't have your zoom lens with you. Argh!)

Vehicle Flip Accident On 17 By 7-Eleven, Across From Ollie's.

We drove by this accident at about 4:10PM today where a vehicle traveling south on 17 somehow flipped over. The above picture is fuzzy as we took it as we were driving by in the opposite direction. We hope whomever was in there is alright. This happened right next to 7-Eleven, across from Ollie's where the old Wal Mart was. This is a good time to mention how we feel about talking on a Cell Phone or texting someone while driving is a very dangerous and possibly a deadly thing to do. We are NOT saying this is the cause of this accident. We are voicing an issue we deal with every day. I have personally come close to being hit on nearly a daily basis because people are to busy on their phones to pay attention to the road and their surroundings.

I praise the people who pull over to talk on the phone if they have to. It shows a very high regard to all others. If you are going to drive, turn your cell phone off. Nothing is worth your life.

Kisses, 175 Ft long Private Ship At Yorktown River Walk Dock

For about the past week everyone going down to the beach has seen this ship. She is named Kisses and is a private ship hailing from England and owned by a private family. She is about 10 years old and made in the same ship yard as the White Cloud that was docked in the same place last year. 175 feet long, she is a beauty. This is only a partial slide show of the many pictures we have taken. We are still working on the rest.

1933 Packard

We were at the River Walk in Yorktown Saturday morning May 1st, and there happened to be a Ferrari Car show there. One of the show stoppers for us though was this 1933 Packard in mint shape. We also did a video on this automobile that we will post on You Tube then host here. In the mean time, enjoy the show.

Pocahontas Mural At The Gloucester Library

The Pocahontas mural on the side of the Gloucester County Library has had it's share of debate. Some people love it, some hate it and some could care less either way. To shed some light on this issue, we thought we would point out that the mural is a time line from left to right of the life of Pocahontas. On the far left of the mural is Chief Powhatan, followed by Pocahontas as a child, then defending Captain John Smith and then with her husband John Rolfe and ending with her last year of life in Europe as the toast of the town. Click Here for more history on Pocahontas. When you understand the mural itself, maybe there can be more appreciation for this wonderful piece we are fortunate to have here in Gloucester.

Your Business Signs In Gloucester County

If you ever wondered what happens to your signs here in Gloucester County, well here they are at the dump. If your signs are not in the right areas, or you do not have approval for these signs, the folks at VDOT have orders to pick them up and throw them out. You are in violation of Gloucester County Ordinances. So spending all that money on signs and just placing them where you think will be seen by the most people will not do you any good. In fact, they may eventually get you into trouble for violating county ordinances. Gloucester has very strict ordinances for a reason. No one wants to travel around and get bombarded with signs at every turn. As a business person myself, I understand the need to advertise your business. Just please go about it the right way.

Abingdon Elementary School Violating Privacy Rights?

Recently it has come to our attention that the Abingdon Elementary School, located right here in Gloucester County is possibly violating the rights of parents of students. Read the story HERE. It isn't unusual for either the government or government controlled entities to request their way into violating your rights, as long as you allow this to happen and you are willing to give up your rights, that's on you. It's when you stand up for your rights and they continue to pry that the line gets stepped over. Abingdon Elementary School and the student services board seems to have a habit of stepping over that line. We highly caution local residents to question this school when they are requesting information, as they may just be asking for your permission to violate your rights. We do not recommend you allow this.

DAV, CHKD Thrift Store Rip Offs

It's a shame when thrift stores get all their merchandise through donations and then mark prices on the used merchandise so high, that often times it is priced higher than what one could buy the same item for new. This is one of many complaints being heard from many shoppers of our local thrift stores. Another complaint that is very common is when these same thrift stores get in used electronics and sell them as is with a fairly good idea or knowing full well that the item does not work or work properly.

The idea behind a thrift store is to sell donated items at reasonable prices allowing the store to make money to help fund the charity behind the store. Not try and sell merchandise for as much as one thinks they can get for an item which like stated above, is often close to the retail price of a new item or even more than what a new item would cost.

In the case of the D.A.V., on their own web site, they admit that they are known for over pricing their merchandise. Click Here to visit their web page on the pricing of their merchandise. It is softly stated that if the price is to high, wait for it to come down. Well that's most of the pricing in the thrift stores these days. It's no wonder more people are now shopping at the local flea market, better prices on merchandise are found there as opposed to the local thrift stores. If you are looking for a decent bargain these days, stick to the Laural shelter or the local flea market. Maybe this will send the right message to those behind the high pricing of merchandise in the other thrift stores.

Rosewell Ruins Picture Slideshow

We recently had a chance to photograph The Rosewell Ruins here in Gloucester County. At one time one of the most prominent houses in Virginia, where George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both spent time at this house and walking these grounds. In the not to distant past, this was a local favorite party place. We have heard word that the grounds are still haunted and that this even made one of the national ghost hunter shows on TV. Well I didn't see or hear any ghosts while I was there, I would have enjoyed talking to Thomas Jefferson though if he were still making appearances. This slide show is 140 pictures long and will take some time to get through. We are donating these pictures back to the folks who now run and maintain the ruins and we hope they put them to some good use.
