Battle of the Hook, 2013 Now Over 1,800 Images Up Online

We now have over 1,800 images up online from the 2013 Battle of the Hook event.  That means we have finally managed to put a dent in our overall collection of images we shot at this event.  Our team was at the event for 3 days starting on Friday evening and didn't finish up until late Sunday afternoon.  We still do not have a final count on how many images we shot.  We had numerous cameras all over and the team was spread out everywhere.

We have one of the most unique image sets out there as we shot in everything from straight on traditional pictures to panoramic views in various sizes.  Our team was not only at the battlefields we were also in the camps, up close and personal.  What we can say is that we are not even close to half way done with all of the images we have.  To date we have put the majority of finished images from the collection up on Flickr.  We have also shared the images through Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr and Twitter and we just put up over 700 images on Google+ .

Not to take anything away from other media outlets, we have seen some truly spectacular images coming from a number of places.  The Daily Press put up a tiny series that has some wonderful photos in it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/minimeredith/  Minimeridith is the name of this particular collection, by Meridith of Moonlightcourt.com website.  She has a really nice collection of images taken at the battle of the Hook that are well worth your time to check out.

https://www.facebook.com/BattleOfTheHook  A number of great photos and further information about the Battle of the Hook and it's history is well documented on this Facebook page.

http://www.revolutionarywarphotoarchives.org/BattleOfTheHook/  Another great place to check out photos.  These however are from the 2008 event but still worth the time to check out.

We will keep everyone up to date as we continue to put out more images.  It's going to take us several months to finish everything.  We still have not even finished our collection from Friday evening of the event.  Our initial count was around 5,000 images, however, we now know that it is closer to 8,000 images total at this point.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/94782749@N03/sets/72157636857805346/  This set on Flickr has 1,575 images to it.  Some are duplicates.  We try not to do this, but with all the images we are working with, it's hard not to.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/94782749@N03/sets/72157637144975774/  294 images starting with Friday evening showing set up for the event as well as the battlefield before troops hit it on Saturday.

RICHMOND – Due to the success of the #100Kids100Days campaign, Governor Bob McDonnell is launching a new social media effort aimed at increasing support for adoption in Virginia.  The new campaign, #IHeartAdoption, will feature photos of adoption supporters telling Virginia why they support adoption.

To participate, Virginians should print out the template, fill in why they support adoption and email a JPEG photo toVAdopts@governor.virginia.gov.  People can also participate by posting their photo to Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #IHeartAdoption.  Submissions could be included on the Virginia Adopts website, Facebook, Twitter or other promotional material.  Click here to download the template.

Speaking about the new social media campaign, Governor McDonnell commented, “Facebook and Twitter have been an integral part of getting the word out about our Virginia Adopts initiative.  We saw enormous success on social media with #100Kids100Days, including kids being matched because of the awareness raised through the #100Kids100Days campaign.  Through #IHeartAdoption we hope to bring even greater awareness to the 1,000 kids in foster care today in Virginia that need a forever home.  Today we are launching our new social media campaign, #IHeartAdoption, to encourage all Virginians to join us in sharing with their friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter why they support adoption.”

Bacon and Cabbage Soup - Recipe of the Day

A cooked rasher. Raw bacon rashers are an essential ingredient of coddle. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
When it happens that you have a dinner consisting of bacon and cabbages, you invariably throw away the liquor in which they have been boiled, or, at the best, give it to the pigs, if you possess any; this is wrong, for it is easy to turn it to a better account for your own use, by paying attention to the following instructions, viz.:—Put your piece of bacon on to boil in a pot with two gallons (more or less, according to the number you have to provide for) of water, when it has boiled up, and has been well skimmed, add the cabbages, kale, greens, or sprouts, whichever may be used, well washed and split down, and also some parsnips and carrots; season with pepper, but no salt, as the bacon will season the soup sufficiently; and when the whole has boiled together very gently for about two hours, take up the bacon surrounded with the cabbage, parsnips, and carrots, leaving a small portion of the vegetables in the soup, and pour this into a large bowl containing slices of bread; eat the soup first, and make it a rule that those who eat most soup are entitled to the largest share of bacon.

The above recipe comes from a very old cookbook.  A bit of history for the cooking world.

Terry McAuliffe Ad: Twisting Facts Retwisted

Because we have to put up with all the crap these two are throwing at each other, we are throwing it back at them everyday.

Now let's see if we have this straight.  Terry said that Ken believes in the Bible and is pro family making Terry anti family?  Ken showed Terry telling us that coal is evil.  If we want electricity in the future maybe we should rub two sticks together?  Brilliant.  Or maybe Terry thinks we should just import our electricity from China?  Now if Ken lied about Terry's involvement with that one company, maybe Terry should sue Ken for liable?  Ya think?  So why isn't he?  Is it that maybe the dates in question for the stock owned were at a time when Terry owned very little after selling off a huge amount?

Too many issues not being answered.  Let's wag the dog.

Mom Loses Sons in Fire, Helps the Homeless Wavy TV Story

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) - After losing her three children and mother-in-law in a fire, a Gloucester woman is giving back to the community that helped her during her darkest hour.

Grogan knows all about loss. On a bitterly cold night in January, fire erupted inside her Summerville Road home.

"The nightmares have gone for the most part," Grogan added. "I had one a couple weeks ago, and it was really bad."

A nightmare isn't even the word to describe what she went through. She was saved from the burning home, but her four loved ones weren't as lucky. Seven-year-old Thomas Grogan, 2-year-old Michael Grogan and six-month-old Gabriel Grogan were killed; their grandmother, Virginia, died after running back into the burning home.

"In my mind, I knew they were gone when nobody came out [of the burning home] after me," Grogan said.

The home was destroyed, but Jessica is rebuilding her life. Part of that, is giving back to a community that helped her husband and her when they had no one else.

"When the fire happened, we were only given three days in a hotel by the Red Cross, and we had nowhere to go," Grogan added.

Grogan and her husband were essentially homeless.

"It only takes one person to change somebody's life," she said.

Jessica, along with a couple friends formed a group inspired by the idea of creating a change. They started a Facebook page called "Make the Homeless Smile." They hope to convince people everywhere to get out and help a neighbor, the same way neighbors helped her when she had nowhere to go.

"There are homeless people everywhere," Grogan added. "You don't know what the situation is, and it happened to them."

For Jessica, the cause is near to the heart. It's also about finishing what a seven-year-old started.

"Little Tom, he was my angel," she said. "Even when he was here, he was an angel in disguise."

In his short time on Earth, Thomas learned the meaning of giving. Jessica says he helped his father ring a charity bell one Christmas. He also donated his piggy bank to help victims after Gloucester was hit by a tornado.

"If a seven-year-old can do it. grown ups can do it too," Grogan said.

This mission by Jessica and her group is really just beginning. They are holding an event September 28 -- that's the day they want everyone to get out and do something nice for someone else.

Inside Look At The Masonic Order

THE ANTEROOM

Fourteen years ago the writer of this volume entered the temple of Freemasonry, and that date stands out in memory as one of the most significant days in his life. There was a little spread on the night of his raising, and, as is the custom, the candidate was asked to give his impressions of the Order. Among other things, he made request to know if there was any little book which would tell a young man the things he would most like to know about Masonry—what it was, whence it came, what it teaches, and what it is trying to do in the world? No one knew of such a book at that time, nor has any been found to meet a need which many must have felt before and since. By an odd coincidence, it has fallen to the lot of the author to write the little book for which he made request fourteen years ago.

This bit of reminiscence explains the purpose of the present volume, and every book must be judged by its spirit and purpose, not less than by its style and contents. Written as a commission from the Grand Lodge of Iowa, and approved by that Grand body, a copy of this book is to be presented to every [viii]man upon whom the degree of Master Mason is conferred within this Grand Jurisdiction. Naturally this intention has determined the method and arrangement of the book, as well as the matter it contains; its aim being to tell a young man entering the order the antecedents of Masonry, its development, its philosophy, its mission, and its ideal. Keeping this purpose always in mind, the effort has been to prepare a brief, simple, and vivid account of the origin, growth, and teaching of the Order, so written as to provoke a deeper interest in and a more earnest study of its story and its service to mankind.

Read the book below for the rest of this story.
